Making sequels has become a kind of trend in Bollywood. But the story was different about a decade ago. In the last 10 years or so, we have witnessed around 20 to 25 franchises but not all have worked at Box Office. Here’s a list of 10 most successful movie franchises of Bollywood.
1. Dabangg
The first part was directed by Abhinav Kashyap and produced by Arbaaz Khan and it went on to become the highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2010. The sequel was directed and produced by Arbaaz, became the second-highest grossing Hindi film of 2012. Dabangg 3 has been announced.
2. Dhoom
First of its kind thriller in Bollywood, Dhoom became one of the top-grossing Hindi films of 2004. The consequent sequels Dhoom 2 and Dhoom 3, which was one of the most expensive films of Bollywood, have been very successful as well. Now, we are waiting for the official announcement about Dhoom 4.
3. Don
Farhan Akhtar remade Amitabh Bachchan’s classic hit Don and how! Don and Don 2 were praised for their action, direction, story and cinematography exemplified by Shah Rukh Khan’s performance. Don 3 is definitely on the cards some day.
4. Golmaal
Rohit Shetty’s train to fame, Golmaal: Fun Unlimited was one of the surprise hits of 2006. It’s sequel Golmaal Returns was even more successful than the original. The third part Golmaal 3 also fared well at the box-office. Rohit Shetty and Ajay Devgn have now announced the fourth part.
5. Hera Pheri
One of Priyadarshan’s best works till date, Hera Pheri has become a cult classic. It was voted as the best Bollywood comedy film of all time in an online poll conducted by The Indian Express. The second part Phir Hera Pheri was directed by Neeraj Vora. Hera Pheri 3 will also come out soon but with a few changes in cast.
6. Krrish
The Krrish series technically started with Koi..Mil Gaya. Krrish was Bollywood’s very first superhero and won both the National and Filmfare awards for special effects. Krrish 3 went one to earn good money too. We hope to see Krrish 4 soon!
7. Munnabhai
One of Sanjay Dutt’s most memorable movies, Munnabhai M.B.B.S. won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film and several Filmfare awards, including the Critics Award for Best Movie and Best Screenplay. The sequel Lage Raho Munna Bhai was the first Hindi film to be shown at the United Nations. Now that Sanjay Dutt is free, we expect to see the third part sooner rather than later.
8. Tanu Weds Manu
Tanu Weds Manu and TWMR were loved by the audience of all age group. The desi masala entertainment served in both movies was loved by all. Both movies emerged as huge money minters at the Box Office and we just can’t wait for the third instalment of the movie.
9. Race
The Abbas-Mastan thriller Race had a very good run at the box-office. The second instalment Race 2 was the first movie to enter the domestic and worldwide; Bollywood’s 100 Crore Club in 2013. There have been many speculations about Race 3 but none confirmed yet.
10. Sarkar
Said to be Bollywood’s version of The Godfather, Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar was archived at the American Academy of Motion Pictures library, along with the sequel Sarkar Raj. Both were huge hits and RGV is soon going to reunite with Amitabh Bachchan in Sarkar 3.
