Based on story of brave heart Neerja Bhanot who sacrificed her life for saving the passengers in the chilling Pan Am hijack, Neerja won our hearts. Sonam Kapoor gave the best performance of her life till date and Ram Madhvani made the audiences eat their hearts out. The movie was full of emotions and kept us hanging on the edges of the seat. We also saw some admirable performances by the new faces in the movie.
9. Kapoor & Sons
After a really long time, we got to see a wholesome family entertainer in Bollywood. Everything about the movie was perfect- the script, the dialogues, the direction, the performances, the editing and even the music. This family drama kept us engrossed throughout and left us feeling warm at the end. This movie has some element for every age group.
8. Udta Punjab
Udta Punjab faced a lot of controversies due to some of its scenes but when the movie eventually released, it turned out to an out-and-out entertainer. The best part about this movie was that it had a very serious message about the rampant drug issue in Punjab. Be it Kareena, Shahid, Diljit or Alia, everyone gave their best performances making the movie a huge success. Alia and Shahid were particularly appreciated for their ‘hatke’ performance.
We saw a few wrestling based movies this year and one of them was Sultan. With Salman Khan in the lead and Anushka Sharma as the leading lady, the movie was a huge success at the box-office. Apart from being a success financially, Sultan was also a pleasure to watch. It is hard to imagine anyone else playing Sultan Khan, the role was made to be played by Sallu bhai. The movie made us laugh, cry and Salman was the main reason behind it all.
Irrfan Khan gave us a mind-blowing performance in Madaari. The movie was realistic to the core and Nishikant Kamat deserves all accolades for the movie. This movie was an appreciable attempt to take a head-on with the issues like corruption we face today.
Akshay Kumar gave us three big hits in the year 2016 but Airlift was the best among them all. Airlift was all about the largest human evacuation in history and the movie showed us all sides of the story. There could not have been a better way to show it all. Akki was the star of the whole movie.
Shoojit Sircar gave us a masterpiece in the form of Pink and the movie was full of amazing performances. The movie talks about the issue of molestation and was able to deliver a powerful story around the issue. Amitabh Bachchan gave an amazing performance and so did the three girls- Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari and Andrea Taring.
3. M.S. Dhoni- The Untold Story
A biopic on Indian Cricketing Captain M.S. Dhoni, Neeraj Pandey presented the complete story in a wonderful manner. From Dhoni’s childhood to his love life, we got to witness every aspect of his life and we absolutely loved it. Sushant Singh Rajput proved his mettle in acting and put his best foot up.
2. Dear Zindagi
Gauri Shinde‘s second directional venture Dear Zindagi and this movie was as flawless as English Vinglish. The movie focused on Alia Bhatt‘s character and brings it to life wonderfully. Shah Rukh Khan has a great cameo and the hard work put in by the whole team paid off quite well.
Aamir Khan came back with a stellar performance in Dangal. This is a terrific film that blends many emotions like patriotism, sportsmanship and drama in a lovely manner. The screenplay was quite fresh and the movie showed wrestling in a whole new light. Fatima Sana Sheikh, Sanya Malhotra, Sakshi Tanwar and Girish Kulkarni also deserve applause.
