After an average first week at the domestic box office with the collection of 106.86 crores, Salman Khan’s Tubelight falls flat in the second week. The movie earned just 2.25 crores on its second Friday. However, on its second Saturday, the movie witnessed a jump in collections. As per early estimates, the 9th day collection of the movie is around 2.75 crores. Second Friday to Second Saturday saw a jump in collections by 37% which is decent but at low levels. After 9 days the total collection of the movie stands at 111.86 crores.
Tubelight is expected to jump further today as it is a Sunday holiday. With the collection of 111.86 crores, Tubelight is currently the fifth highest grossing movie of 2017 after Bahubali 2, Raees, Jolly LLB 2 and Badrinath Ki Dulhania.Tubelight was highest opening week Bollywood grosser of 2017 ahead of Shahrukh Khan’s Raees but might end below Raees’s lifetime total.
It would be interesting to see, how the movie performs from second Monday. It still needs to collect 27 crores to beat the lifetime collection of Raees and emerge as the highest grossing Bollywood film of 2017. Well, the first target of Tubelight will be to beat Jolly LLB 2 (117 crores) and Badrinath Ki Dulhania (116 crores). Despite poor performance, the worldwide collection of Tubelight is all set to cross 200 crores.
Made on a budget of 100 crores excluding Salman Khan’s fee, Tubelight needs to earn at least 150 crores to be called a hit at the box office. The producers have already made a huge profit through digital, satellite, music and distribution rights. But it is the distributors, who have to incur huge losses. There are reports that the distributors have started approaching Salman to pay back the losses. It would be interesting to see how Salman reacts as he is not bound to any contract for payback.
