2016 has almost come to an end with two mega releases this month ‘Befikre’ and ‘Dangal’. Like every year, Bollywood saw ups and downs this year as well. Let’s have a look at the top 10 controversies that shook the Bollywood in 2016.
1) Salman’s rape comment
It all started with an interview for the promotion of ‘Sultan’. While talking about the wrestling shots, Salman narrated how he had to pick up a man weighing 120 kg almost 10 times for five different camera angles. According to the actor, this routine went on for six to seven hours. “It is the most difficult thing,” he said Salman, explaining what it was like when he walked out of the ring after the hectic shoot schedule. These are his exact words: “When I used to walk out of that ring, it used to be actually like a raped woman walking out.”
That matter reached another level when the actor was slapped with a 10-crore lawsuit by a Haryanvi gang rape victim for his insensitive comment. The rape victim claims that she had been through tough times in her life and this statement made by Salman Khan had deeply hurt her.
2) Aamir Khan’s intolerance statement
At a press meet, Aamir said that he and his wife Kiran Rao often discuss how India is getting intolerant day by day. “Kiran and I have lived all our lives in India. For the first time, she said, should we move out of India? That’s a disastrous and big statement for Kiran to make to me. She fears for her child. She fears about what the atmosphere around us will be. She feels scared to open the newspapers every day. That does indicate that there is a sense of growing disquiet,” he said
Soon after, he was removed as the ambassador of Incredible India and was replaced by Amitabh Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra.
3) Sunny Leone’s humiliating interview by Bhupendra Chaubey
Sunny Leone was interviewed by CNN-IBN anchor, Bhupendra Chaubey. Some of the stupid questions that were asked were – “There are lots of married women who look at Sunny Leone as a threat to their husbands, do you not care about all this?” “You would like to work with Aamir Khan, but would Aamir Khan like to work with you?” “How would you deal with the statement of a member of parliament, who, in his speeches, has held you responsible for corrupting Indian morality?” “Since you have come to Indian cinema, the number of people watching porn has increased proportionately to the extent that we are now the world’s largest consumer of porn. Can you respond to that?” These were the major disgusting questions that Bhupendra asked! We must say that Sunny refused to be bullied, stood up for her life choices, and came out like a trooper that she is! She answered the queries with wit and poise, thereby, garnering applause from known names of the film fraternity.
4) Jacqueline Fernandez ‘Kirpan’ act in ‘Dishoom’
Jacqueline was seen wearing a Kirpan (Religious symbol of the Sikhs) in “Sau Tarah” song from Dishoom. The general secretary of Sikh Gurudwara Prabhandhak Committee Manjinder Singh Sirsa wrote a letter to the Censor Board to remove the scene from the song before the movie releases. Moreover, he wanted the entire cast and director of the film, including Jacqueline, to send a written apology for hurting the religious sentiments of Sikhs.
5) Arijit Singh’s open letter to Salman Khan on Facebook
Arijit had released an open letter to Salman pleading him to retain his version of “Jag Ghoomeya” which Salman later allegedly got recorded by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and removed Arijit’s version from ‘Sultan’. The duo apparently had an argument when Salman was presenting an award to Arijit. Salman felt insulted and since then the actor has reportedly banned him from any of his films. So, the song sung by him for Sultan was reportedly going to be chopped. So Arijit took to his official Facebook page and wrote an apology to Salman. Hours later, he wrote another post. In the new post, he said he hopes to get through to Salman while also predicting trouble. Nobody could have thought that his statement would be so harmful and cause such repercussions.
6) Panama Controversy for the Bachchans
The nation was shocked when two members of the Bollywood’s most noble family were accused of having offshore links. Yes, you guessed it right. We are mentioning Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in connection with the Panama Papers controversy. Both the mega stars said there was no truth to the leaked reports but they lacked an explanation as to why their name featured on the list.
7) Salman dissed for being selected as the Rio Goodwill ambassador
Due to his sports movie ‘Sultan’, Salman was selected as the Rio Goodwill ambassador. However, it didn’t go down too well with wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt and ‘The Flying Sikh’ Milkha Singh. They condemned his appointment and had asked the Indian Olympic Association to rethink their decision. Both the sports personalities expressed their anger over the move on social media website and urged the association to appoint a sportsperson instead. According to both of these sports stars, Salman Khan is not the right fit to motivate sportsmen at the Rio Olympics 2016.
8) Udta Punjab
Firstly, the CBFC had refused certification to the movie for the use of abusive language. Initially, the film was completely banned from release, but then the Board recommended 40 cuts for the film. Secondly, Shefali S Jha had written an open letter to Alia Bhatt in which she not only questions the actress’ preparations for the role of Bihari migrant, but also pointed out some evident loop-holes in the trailer. Thirdly, the battle between the CBFC and Phantom Films regarding the censorship in ‘Udta Punjab’ had reached the High Court and the film release was postponed. Fourthly, two days before its release, Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor starer movie got leaked online.
9) Kapil Sharma leaves Comedy Nights and starts The Kapil Sharma Show
It all happened because of the rival show Comedy Nights Bachao co-hosted by Krushna Abhishek and Bharti Singh. Kapil felt their show was getting too much limelight and his show was getting overshadowed. Hence he moved to Sony Tv and started The Kapil Sharma Show.
10) Fawad Khan banned in India
Due to the Uri attacks, the call to ban Pakistani actors from Bollywood movies by MNS leader Raj Thackeray proved problematic to Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan and Ali Zafar. They were asked to leave India within 48 hours and Fawad Khan’s role in ADHM was chopped only to the most necessary scenes.
