The Umbrella Academy is one of the most popular shows on Netflix. It is an American superhero web television series based on the comic book series (by Gerard Way) of the same name published by Dark Horse Comics. The concept for The Umbrella Academy came to Gerard while touring with the American rock band My Chemical Romance.
The wacky superhero drama is based on the life of a dysfunctional family of adopted sibling superheroes. These superheroes reunite to solve the mystery of their father’s death and the threat of an impending apocalypse.
The first issue of the comic book was released on September 19th, 2007. Steve Blackman later adapted it into a web series titled The Umbrella Academy. The first season premiered on 15th Feb 2019 was a huge hit and the fans are already waiting for season 2. When will it be on Netflix? Who’s starring in season 2? Let’s take a look.
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 Plot
The story revolves around a group of seven children who were born along with 36 other infants on the same day in 1989, to women who showed no sign of pregnancy until labour began. Eccentric billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves adopt these children and turn them into a superhero team in what he calls “The Umbrella Academy”.
The siblings in the house wear matching uniforms and join forces to fight evil off the streets under the guidance of their father until his sad demise. Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy will bring together the irreverent family with a motive to find their father’s murderer.

The Umbrella Academy Season 2 Cast
The Umbrella Academy stars award-winning actress Mary J. Blige as Cha-Cha; Cameron Britton as her partner Hazel; Ashley Madekwe as Detective Patch, John Magaro as Leonard Peabody. Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castaneda, Emmy Raver Lampman and Robert Sheehan feature in The Umbrella Academy as the Hargreeves family.
The Season 2 time-travel show will have new cast additions – Marin Ireland will be seen as straight-forward Texas mum Sissy, Yusuf Gatewood will play the born-leader and loving husband Raymond and Ritu Arya from the ‘Humans’ fame will star as Lila.
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 Production Status
On October 24, 2019, Netflix posted a photo of the cast of The Umbrella Academy hinting at the arrival of season 2 of the super hit show. The makers had earlier confirmed that it took nearly ‘18 months’ to complete series but apparently, the season finished way before the COVID-19 massacre.
Season 2 filming started on 17th June 2019. It was operating under the working title of Mercury. The filming wrapped up on 25th Nov 2019. Despite many Netflix Original productions on hold due to Coronavirus, The Umbrella Academy S2 is up with all energy and enthusiasm.
Nonetheless, showrunner Steve Blackman shared a glimpse of post-production work progress from his home studio.
