Well, the release date is out now. The official Goblin Slayer X account has confirmed that the second season of the anime is coming next month, premiering in Japan on Oct 6, 2023.

Failure of the movie: Goblin Slayer: Goblin’s Crown

The movie titled ‘Goblin Slayer: Goblin’s Crown’ was released in Feb 2020 following the success of the first season. Based on the light novel, Goblin Slayer: Goblin’s Crown is set after the first season, with the first 25 minutes recapping past events. The remainder of the movie adapts future events but doesn’t act as a continuation of season 1.

The movie tanked at the box office. It did only ¥100,000,000 in Japan, which is nearly 1 million USD. Fans should still watch the movie as it highlights canon events we probably won’t see in season 2.

What will be the plot of Goblin Slayer Season 2?

For Goblin Slayer, the source material is a light novel series of the same name. Written by Kumo Kagyu and illustrated by Noboru Kannatsuki, it began serialization online in February 2016 by the Japanese publishing company, SB Creative.

There are three Goblin Slayer light novel series. The main novel series has 16 volumes. The other two are side stories. Side story one titled Goblin Slayer Side Story: Year One has two volumes. The second side story titled Goblin Slayer Side Story 2: Daikatana of Singing Death also has two volumes. There are two manga series as well. Goblin Slayer light novels are still ongoing.

The first season covers the initial two volumes of the source material as well as a chapter from short stories of Volume 4. Rather than addressing the third and fourth volumes, Goblin Slayer: Goblin’s Crown film adapted the fifth volume.

So, 13 out of 16 released light novel volumes are available for adaptation. So, the second season of Goblin Slayer might adapt volumes three and four before moving on to volume six, or it may directly start with volume six and progress the story forward. There is more than enough source material available to produce at least five seasons of Goblin Slayer.

The first season of Goblin Slayer saw a young man who witnessed his family murdered at the hands of a throng of goblins as a child. He devotes his life to hunting down and killing as many goblins as he can. Season 1 follows Goblin Slayer as he forms a ragged crew with a human rookie adventurer named Priestess, a High Elf Archer, a Dwarf Shaman and a Lizard Priest to take on a group of goblins led by the Goblin Lord.

Assuming that the anime takes the latter course, volumes 6–10 follow the story of the Goblin Slayer’s newly formed party as they join forces with a young wizard boy in order to deal with a goblin nest infesting an old mausoleum.

According to volume six of the light novel, the official synopsis is as follows:

“Spring has arrived, and a new crop of would-be adventurers has turned up at the Guild along with it. Among the newcomers is a haughty young wizard boy whose desire to hunt only goblins has Guild Girl slightly concerned. Meanwhile, there’s a new adventurer-training facility being built not far from the frontier town, and Goblin Slayer happens to know the village that used to stand on that spot. The party finds itself teaming up with the wizard boy and heading to an old mausoleum to deal with some goblins–but it looks like this brazen new adventurer might just be more trouble than he’s worth!”
