Dedh Ishqiya Movie Review : A Brainy Thriller With Powerful Character Performances
Dedh Ishqiya (sequel to 2010 film Ishqiya ), released last Friday as the first major release of the year with great expectations and it does not disappoints us. The movie is a sheer romantic brainy thriller packed with heavyweight character performances, witty dialogues, excellent direction, gentle romance and a hidden truth. The film also sees the great comeback of the dancing queen Madhuri Dixit on the silver screen.
Let’s dig a little deeper into Dedh Ishqiya through our Dedh Ishqiya Movie Review.
Story and Direction:
The plot is somewhat similar to its prequel as Khalujan (Naseeruddin Shah) enters the city of Mehmudabad after stealing a royal necklace with his partner Babban (Arshad Warsi) and turns himself as a fake Nawab Iftekhar Hussain to woo the gorgeous widow of a royal family Begum Para who is about to re-marry a person with a poetic talent, therefore a poetry competition is held in the city for electing the new husband for Begum Para and new Nawab of Mehmudabad.
Here comes Nawab Jaan Mohammad (Vijay Raaz) the main competitor of Khalujan in the competition , who also has dream to marry Begum Para. Soon Khalujan and Begum Para fall in love while Babban is attracted towards Muniya (Huma Quraishi), beautiful and seductive caretaker of Begum Para. She has her own secrets as she plans to kidnap Begum Para with the help of Babban for her own reasons. .All these events forms the crux of the film and ends with a surprising climax..
Director Abhishek Chaubey, after directing the prequel, has come up with a brilliant work with a flawless and worth praising direction. The romantic shots between Naseeruddin Shah and Madhuri Dixit have been shot very smoothly. Though the plot looks somewhat stretched but Abhishek overshadows it with great execution. Use of Urdu language looks very situational but it has been used too much which can go against the movie. Music is god while cinematography is outstanding.
The character performances are the backbone of the film. Starting with Naseeruddin Shah who proves his excellence with ease and simplicity. He shines in every scene of the film and confirms his stand as one of the finest actors in Bollywood. Madhuri Dixit as Begum Para returns on the screen with a bang and has shown that she has not lost the grace of her great acting skills. Her dialogue delivery is very appreciable. Arshad Warsi has also given his best with his one liners and whatever opportunity he has and leaves vital impact. Huma Qureshi has played her mystifying character very well. A special applause to Vijay Raaz for playing the role of a perfect antagonist. He looks very confident and intense in every frame.
The music is given by Vishal Bhardwaj which sounds good but you still feel missing of a hit number. The tracks like ‘Zabaan Jale Hai‘, ‘Dil Ka Mijaaz‘ and ‘Jagaave Saari Raina‘ are average. Hamari Ataria Pe looks good due to the effortless dance moves of Madhuri Dixit but it comes at the end. Horn Ok Please sung by Honey Singh is funny and enjoyable but lacks the magic of Honey Singh’s hit numbers.
