The much awaited extravaganza of watching ‘Coldplay‘ perform in India took place on Saturday, November 19. It was a star studded affair with a super enthusiastic crowd at the MMRDA grounds in Mumbai. This Coldplay concert has struck all the right chords making the Global Citizen India 2016 a night to remember! Bollywood celebs attended the show and some of them even performed on stage. The singer Chris Martin enthralled everyone with his band’s hit numbers, leaving the audiences spellbound.

Actress Parineeti Chopra and Arjun Kapoor announced the opening of the festival. Then there was Arijit Singh performing on stage, setting the mood with ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.’ Music composers Shankar Ehsaan Loy set the stage on fire with their tracks ‘Kal Ho Na Ho‘ and Breathless. Actress Sonakshi Sinha pepped up the music with her rendition of ‘Har Kissi Ko Nahi Milta.’ Farhan Akhtar performed the title track of ‘Rock On‘ and Shraddha Kapoor joined him singing chartbusters from Aashiqui 2. The energetic Ranveer Singh performed a dance act from his upcoming movie and one from Bajirao Mastani.

Sachin Tendulkar and Ratan Tata made their gracious presence on the stage. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed at least 80,000 people present at the Global Citizen Festival, via video conference after introduction by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The Prime Minister also said how he enjoys being amidst the youth and was quoted saying, “You bring an energy and idealism that is unparalleled.”

American pop star Demi Lovato made the crowd at Global Citizen Festival India 2016 dance to her tunes as she performed for the first time in the country. Jay Z got the crowds to sway in sync to his rapping. Actors Shah Rukh Khan and Freida Pinto walked through the stage and talked about the social issues and causes. But the crowds were getting restless as they had been waiting for hours for the band to come.

Coldplay took the stage, saying, “We could be heroes. Just for one day.” Singer Chris Martin in his magical voice sang his famous hits ‘Yellow’ and the crowds went crazy after his para..para…paradise! He then sang ‘Hymn for the Weekend’ whose video was shot in India.

Coldplay performing in India

Chris Martin invited legendary singer AR Rahman on to the stage. He started with ‘Tu hi re’ and went on to sing Dil se’s title track and Tamil version of ‘Hamma hamma.’  The two sang Rahman’s version of ‘Maa tujhe salaam..Vande mataram’, after which Chris waved the Indian flag. Chris then sang his own version of the Bollywood hit ‘Channa mereya‘ and the audiences just couldn’t stop cheering.

The event is organized to support some important social causes and spread awareness about the same like global literacy, cleanliness, sustainable development and more.
